Llanelli Online

Llanelli Online is a hyperlocal news site, for local people, addressing local issues.

WHY LLANELLI ONLINE?

Newspapers in print are in crisis and large towns like Llanelli risk losing their local, independent coverage of news.  Many smaller, independent papers are being bought over by larger conglomerates and then shut down, leaving towns and villages in the dark, risking the values of democracy and freedom of information.

Llanelli Online was born out of necessity.  When the local newspaper's website closed, the town with a population of approximately 35,000+, was left without online local, community-centred news coverage.  Grass roots sports were not being promoted, charities and community organisations were not being promoted and a whole town had been left without information and news on those day-to-day issues effecting each of our lives.

WHAT IS OUR SOLUTION?

How would you like to be part of a community based, online hyperlocal news site, that would deliver your news, about your community, to your home, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without ever having to buy a newspaper again.  Here at Llanelli Online that is exactly what we are offering you!

Llanelli Online is about capturing the local and national news using the latest technology while remaining true to the traditional values of journalism.  We have created a Hyperlocal news site that will report exclusively on Llanelli’s news issues, community events and sporting events, as well as being a portal for you to share those things that are important to you and a place to see offers and advertisements from businesses in the surrounding area.   Llanelli Online will be a local site, for local people, outlining local issues.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT OUR SERVICE?

Llanelli Online is filling the void left by the removal of our regional, independent newspapers.  People are no longer able to access the local news they want and have instead turned to Llanelli Online to provide that service.  We are unique because we can provide regional, community-centred news, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the touch of a button or the click of a mouse.  We are journalists from Llanelli who are fully invested in and committed to the community - we want the people of Llanelli to be able to continue to receive local news, reported by local people, at any time of the day or night.

HOW IT WORKS

If there is a news story we will be there.  If there is a large sporting event, we will be there.  If there is a large community gathering, we will be there.  Llanelli Online is hyperlocal featuring all that is happening in the community including charity events, court reports, council meetings, community events, grass roots and professional sports, local and national news.   As well as being uploaded to the main website, all posts will be shared across the main social networks and Llanelli Online will also target large audiences such as schools, community groups, sports teams, large organisations and businesses.  Llanelli Online also includes an extensive Business Directory to encourage local people to use local businesses.

WHAT WE WANT TO ACHIEVE

We created a skeleton site and in the first 6 weeks the site drew 60,000 visitors.  There is a real thirst for local news, told by local people and here at Llanelli Online we believe that we are bucking the trend and catering for a new emerging audience.  The site has been listed as a ‘beacon’ for the town by Cardiff University’s School of Journalism.

We want to continue to build Llanelli Online to become the ‘go-to’ site    not only  for  the local community of Llanelli but also local charity organisations, local businesses and schools and colleges.  We eventually plan to include dedicated pages for community groups, businesses and educational organisations.  We want Llanelli Online to be the ‘one-stop shop’ for regional news, issues and events.  To achieve this, we need to upgrade our existing computer equipment, employ a dedicated Sales and Marketing Executive and a Web Administrator.  As the site grows Llanelli Online also hopes to take on graduates in journalism/social media and any other necessary staff members required for the efficient running of the website.  Llanelli Online would then be a means of helping to increase employment in the area.

So how will we achieve this?  To be able to launch, maintain and progress Llanelli Online, we need your support.  We are hoping to raise £2000 but we’re not just asking for “something for nothing”.  Not only will you be able to benefit from 24/7 local news by local people, we are also offering you amazing rewards, to thank you for your support and so that you can say that you were part of creating Llanelli Online, a valuable, regional news portal.  Check out the list of rewards below:

We hope to reach our target amount but if we exceed that amount, we would like to use this funding to further develop Llanelli Online by purchasing new camera equipment and a specially modified van, that would be equipped with the technology for news gathering and broadcasting.  This would allow us to stream live from news scenes, sporting events or community events.

Capital Raise

  • By reaching our target of £2000, we will be able to maintain, develop and progress the website
  • If we raise a further £4000, this will allow us to purchase New Camera Equipment (Sony Alpha A9 HD)
  • Another £2500 would allow us to purchase a Mobile Office (Van), which would allow us to report and stream live from events

Total £8500

Every penny raised will go towards growing, sustaining and developing this vital hyperlocal news source.
