This is an exciting drama, which looks at the lives of eight families living on a London Council Estate.
It is set within a culturally diverse community, one that is truly representative of London. In this compelling drama we embark upon a journey, getting to know the ‘real’ people behind the walls of the block. We follow the characters through their struggles and victories, their joy and their pain as they navigate their way through life. These are hardworking people, mostly, determined to offer their children the opportunities that were not available to them.
The whole idea of the “working class” has evolved over the years and in the UK it makes up roughly 48% of the population.
The Block delves into the hearts and minds of some of the people beyond the statistics. We will show that behind closed doors these are people with hopes and dreams like everyone else and that their homes are truly their castles.
My name is Donna Taylor and I’m the founder of DT Films. I’m also an actress, writer and director. I have been in the business for over 22 years, performing on stage and in film as well as running a theatre company.
I was brought up on a council estate, my family never had much in the way of money but, they were very loving and supportive.
Over the past few years I have been creating short movies that reflect the struggles of people in everyday life. I love being able to inspire children and teens who have working class roots. They so often have very little self belief and being able to encourage them to believe that anything is possible is an extremely important part of my work.
Karen Bryson: Actress and Co-Producer
Karen is an actress, writer and producer, with nearly 20 years experience in the business. She has worked extensively as a television actress for the past 10 years.
“I’m incredibly excited to be a part of this amazing project, as I feel it’s a long time coming. More often than not, we see a very tainted view of the working classes. This includes people from lower income families or those living in social housing. This is primarily due to pessimistic mass media coverage and one sided documentaries offering the view of ‘bleeding the state’. We are rarely given the opportunity to really see behind closed doors in a drama of this kind. The Block will be easy to relate to with intriguing characters, regardless of social strata or income. With heartfelt stories that confirm the human condition, as it’s the same for everyone.
I have no doubt that with The Block; we will redress a clear imbalance whilst having you gripped!”

Tim Dowd: Director
Tim is a renowned director who has worked on numerous productions for I.T.V., including extended residencies on Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Heartbeat and The Royal. He has also directed for the BBC on Harbour Lights and Casualty. We are very excited to be working with him on The Block!
“I've just read The Block, it’s brilliant. I love all the characters and want to spend more time with them. I love the clever way that they introduced and the transitions between exterior and interior. The dialogue is so natural and real; the audience will believe these people and take them to their hearts. Anything I can do to help or get involved would be a privilege.”
