Empowering communities to empower themselves!
A purpose-built, transparent and democratic social network, that helps fund and showcases projects recommended by its user base.
Have you ever wondered where your money goes when you donate to charity or how it is used? Or are you concerned about who the organisation is that you are using your hard-earned cash to support? Do you long for a simpler, more transparent way of donating to causes that you are passionate about or that you, and others like you, agree are worthy?
Me too! That’s why I’ve spent the last four years working on Attollo! My name is Nicholas Pantelli and I’ve invested everything I have, everything I am to get Attollo ready for launch. I’ve sacrificed my time, my finances, my physical and mental health! Attollo is what gets me out of bed in the morning and forces me to be the best version of myself. As the founder and CEO of Attollo, I’ve sacrificed a lot to get Attollo to the place it is now. I withdrew from my undergraduate degree, before graduating. I quit both my full time and part time job (against the advice of all my friends and family) to further develop the concept. Attollo was accepted into the world’s largest free accelerator programme (Entrepreneurial Spark) and I’m currently negotiating our way into another. I’ve built a team of six educated, experienced and inspiring individuals to help me run Attollo, some of which have founded/directed companies that are now multinational organisations and am working alongside journalists and editors to promote Attollo as much as possible.
On a more personal note the fundamental reason for me starting Attollo, is that people are struggling and they need help. No one should be homeless or hungry in 2017, no child should be deprived of food or education and no community should be deprived of those things that gives it its lifeblood. I’m trying to combat a narrative that people need to suffer for the collective benefit of the country.
To better understand the area that Attollo will be operating in, I researched many different charities, NGO’s, social impact organisations and Community Interest Companies (CIC’s) and I looked at how they worked tirelessly to bring about social, environmental, political and cultural progress to those most in need in the world. However, like me, you have probably seen the reports in our national and world press on how many of these organisations are now mistrusted by the very people they are seeking to influence to support their causes. Their lack of transparency, the top-heavy nature of the organisations and lack of democracy have had a huge negative impact on people’s willingness to donate.
The concept for Attollo came about because I recognised the need for a transparent, traceable, system of giving; a method which will allow you to donate to causes that have been democratically agreed as being ‘worthy’ by a majority of your peers. Too often we are ‘told’ what causes are commendable or most deserving of our donations. We are bombarded with pleas for support which play on our generous natures, with little or no information on where the cash will go or how it will be used. Attollo is seeking to change that norm – to shift the paradigm!
So, how will Attollo change the way you donate to worthy causes or support your local community?
Firstly, Attollo is a platform of the people, for the people; it is completely democratic and transparent and plans to fund user-generated projects from its own revenue streams. This is a completely unique concept.
Secondly, Attollo will work alongside communities, investing in their people, their resources and their abilities. It will create community cohesive, environmentally friendly and educational based projects using small-medium sized companies, local to the area of development.
Furthermore, Attollo will continue to work with the community whilst the project(s) are being developed. By using local companies to carry out the development of the projects and by speaking with community leaders, experts, local authorities etc., we can commission projects that are truly reflective of the wishes of the community - this keeps money in local communities and creates long-term jobs in the area.
Sounds good? But how does it actually work?
Attollo will be a purpose-built, social networking platform which will be open to all members of society and will allow like-minded individuals to utilise its benefits. Users will be able to create a series of ‘Passion Pages’ based on projects that they feel would benefit society, the environment, the local community or an individual in need. Each Passion Page must meet standard criteria before being endorsed by the platform. The criteria will encompass some of the following:
How does the community benefit?
How does the environment benefit?
What forward thinking/innovative models can be applied to the project?
How many people will use the project directly?
How do we use the project to help educate others?
What makes this project stand out from other comparative projects?
Once a Passion Page has passed the screening process, it is uploaded to the platform and is then open to the entire user base for them to vote upon. This makes Attollo as democratic as possible. There is power in collective action and it is hoped that our user base can capitalise upon this in a positive way, harnessing the power of social impact. Once our user base rallies behind their preferred project and the project meets the set threshold for ‘likes’ or ‘subscribes’ (which will be dependent on the size of the project), Attollo will then implement the second stage of the process. Attollo will commission the project in a sustainable, ecologically friendly, innovative and community cohesive way. The projects will be commissioned by Attollo investing both capital and resources directly into the cause – no monies will be paid to the creator of the Passion Page. At every stage, we will work with the community in which the development is taking place to make sure we can create a mutual, proactive, longstanding relationship with the people of the area. We will do this by engaging with experts, local community leaders and local authorities when commissioning the projects.
Throughout the development phase, Attollo will constantly update the user base about the project, through blog posts, pictures, and video journals, all posted to the relevant page on the platform. Moreover, where the project requires it, Attollo is also pledging to use small-to-medium sized companies for the development work, that are local to the projects. By doing this, Attollo is investing in local communities, creating long-term jobs and boosting regional economies. All materials used in development will be ecologically viable, locally sourced and sustainably requisitioned. Attollo will look at new, safe and innovative ways in which we can deliver community cohesion, whilst actively trying to reduce our carbon footprint.
So, what do I want to achieve?
By using LEOcrowd and crowdfunding I am hoping to raise £35,000, which will go towards our start-up costs that include but are not limited to the following:
If we achieve more than our target amount, all the additional funds will be used to expand the reach of Attollo. For example, if we raise an additional:
£50,000 = Two flagship projects in addition to the nine we have planned over the next year
£150,000 = Will allow us to do the above, plus negotiate our way into various networking events, conferences and summits. Furthermore, it will help us gain exposure from Journalists and blog writers and will give Attollo the scope to hire between 2-3 individuals facilitating growth further. Finally, a donation of that size will allow Attollo to update its online platform in accordance with the demands of the user base and other stakeholders. The donations will be split between technological advancements, commissioning of projects, promotion and advertising and other operational costs.
£300,000 = All of the above plus further development of all platforms applications. Commission nationwide education and development projects.
However, I’m not just asking you to donate to Attollo without offering you something in return. If you pledge to help us we will offer the following as a thank you for your support:
I would really encourage you to back our project and ask that you click the reward down the right-hand side of the page that you feel is right for you. Any and all support is much appreciated.
Let me leave you with my vision for Attollo.
My mission is for Attollo to potentially unlock real social, economic and environmental progress. Attollo aims to create generations of altruistic, collectively minded and pro-social/environmental individuals and it was built upon the belief system that Social Media can be utilised for the good of the community at large. Furthermore, Attollo aims to re-write the typical business model and I believe that Attollo can operate just as successfully as any other business. I believe that pro-social and pro-business organisations aren’t necessarily opposed to one and other.
My long-term ambitions are to use the platform as a way of lifting communities out of poverty. By giving communities the opportunity to empower themselves as they grow, a mentality is created whereby individuals no longer feel powerless. Attollo is completely action orientated - it has been designed to get people noticing the defects in society and designed so people can look out for their own communities and understand that it only takes a little bit of compassion to make real, positive change. Attollo is pushing for a fairer, freer world and we want you to be part of that. Attollo holds the potential to unlocking real social, economic and environmental progress, so please join us as we make a difference and empower communities to empower themselves!
